Collector showcase: oyster portraits in a Virginia river home

Collector showcase: oyster portraits in a Virginia river home

One of my favorite things about painting oysters is that no two are ever alike.

Just as no two people have the same face, every oyster has its own personality, curves, textures, and character. That's what inspired this collection of four oyster paintings, now hanging together in a beautiful river home in Virginia's Northern Neck.

While many of my colorful oyster paintings celebrate movement and energy, these pieces take a quieter, more dramatic approach. Each oyster is painted against a deep black background, allowing its unique shape and details to take center stage. The dark backdrop creates contrast and focus, inviting you to study each oyster as an individual portrait rather than simply part of a larger collection.

Together, the four paintings create a conversation. Each oyster is distinct, yet they belong together—much like the families, friendships, and communities that make coastal living so meaningful.

I especially love how these collectors chose to display the paintings in a gallery arrangement. The grouping creates a strong visual statement while still allowing each piece to maintain its own identity. The result feels modern, elegant, and perfectly at home in their waterfront retreat.

Elsewhere in the home, a single large oyster portrait serves as a focal point in the main living area. Like the collection in the office, the black background strips away distractions and allows the oyster's unique personality to take center stage. The result is simple, modern, and quietly dramatic—a celebration of the beauty hidden within one of the Chesapeake Bay's most iconic treasures.

These wonderful collectors live in Virginia's river country near Deltaville, Urbanna, and White Stone—three towns that have long inspired my work. Their home reflects so much of what I love about the Chesapeake Bay lifestyle: natural beauty, relaxed sophistication, and a deep connection to the water.

As an artist, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing original artwork become part of a family's everyday life. Thank you to these collectors for sharing their home and allowing me to showcase how original oyster paintings can bring character, texture, and a sense of place to a space.

If you're looking for original oyster paintings, coastal artwork, or modern coastal art for your home, I invite you to explore my current collection and discover the piece that speaks to you.
